Stigelos hike

The name says it all: on the Stigelos hiking route, you can only go in one direction. ‘Obsi’, as the locals would say – right up the mountain. An inscription – carved into the rock – suggests that the path was created in 1645. The route connects Oberdorf with Nesselboden. Nesselboden is home to the gondola lift’s intermediate station. If you’ve run out of energy after the strenuous climb up Stigelos, you can take the gondola lift up to the Weissenstein to cover the final few metres of elevation.

Sunrise on the Baumfluehchöpfli

The early bird catches the worm – or the first rays of the day’s sun. In the case of the Balmfluehchöpfli, these have to be hard-earned. The summit juts out slightly beyond the first Jura range and therefore offers the best view of the rising sun, the imposing Alpine range and the Mittelland stretching out below. The walk from Nesselboden or the Weissenstein (accessible only by car in the early morning) takes a brisk 60 minutes, but the sight of the rising sun more than makes up for it.

You can also take a leisurely stroll on the Weissenstein. The walk to Hinter Weissenstein takes you through gentle terrain and lush mountain meadows, before a charming, privately run mountain restaurant provides a rustic feast.

Before you set off, find out all about the conditions on site and immerse yourself in this fascinating world. The key to the cave can be collected from the Hinter Weissenstein restaurant upon payment of an entrance fee.
